HSC is a Tobacco Free Campus

In the summer of 2011, Human Service Center made a decision that its entire campus will become tobacco free effective January 1, 2013. We made this decision because of concern for the health and well-being of our staff and consumers. From the literature, it is clear that persons with mental illnesses die up to 25 years earlier than the average citizen and suffer increased medical co-morbidity. Smokers with mental illness have more psychiatric symptoms, increased hospitalizations, and require higher dosages of medications. Clients entering treatment for a substance use disorder are more likely to be dependent on nicotine than are members of the general public. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and deaths in the United States.

If you are interested in quitting tobacco use, please contact the Illinois Lung Association’s Quitline at 1-866-QUIT-YES (1-866-784-8937 or TTY for hearing impaired: 1-800-501-1068. They will provide you with counseling, support and free nicotine replacement products.
